Unclaimed Property

Every year, substantial sums of money remain unclaimed in Canada — including dividend and interest payments, dormant account balances, and securities not exchanged following corporate actions.

Why Property Becomes Unclaimed

Unclaimed property typically arises due to one or more of the following situations:

Over time, this property is classified as “unclaimed” and may be subject to Provincial reporting requirements.

Unclaimed property legislation is administered at the provincial level, with active programs currently in:

  • Alberta
  • British Columbia
  • Manitoba
  • Quebec
  • New Brunswick

Each jurisdiction sets specific thresholds, dormancy periods, and reporting obligations for unclaimed property.  Alliance Trust Company is required to attempt contact with the rightful owner before remitting the property to the applicable provincial authority.

If you believe Alliance Trust Company may be holding unclaimed property on your behalf, please contact us at inquiries@alliancetrust.ca. Include the following:

  • Description of the property or investment
  • Your current and previous mailing addresses
  • A phone number where we can reach you
  • Any supporting documents verifying your identity and legal interest in the property

Please note: No claims will be processed without satisfactory evidence of ownership and/or authority.
